Stating Your Thesis

A thesis statement will be one or two sentences stating what is to be answered or proven, or what the audience will learn. Analytical, expository, and argumentative papers generally have thesis statements. Narrative papers don't always include a thesis statement, but one could be helpful in the first paragraph of the paper.

Example of a thesis statement for an argumentative paper:

The number of overweight and obese children in America has risen dramatically over the past twenty years due to video games and television. Schools and parents should be required to provide more opportunities to increase physical activity in children, teach proper nutritional habits and limit the amount of time children view television and play video games.

The paper that follows should present an argument and give evidence to support the claim that the number of obese children has increased due to video games and television and it is a major health issue.
