The Refine my results menu on the left side of the OneSearch screen contains a list of categories, which are referred to as facets. By selecting and not selecting these facets you can narrow your search results to get the results you are seeking.
The following facets are displayed at the top of the "Refine my results" menu.
- Expand My Results - selecting this box displays items in your OneSearch results list that you do not have full-text access to. The benefit of seeing these search results is that it makes it easier to submit a Resource Sharing request to get book or article you want from another library.
- Sort by - Change the sort order of how your results appear sorting either by Relevance or Date-newest.
- Resource Type - Click the "Show More" link to see a complete list of resource types available in your search results list. For example, articles, audio visual, book chapters, reference entries, web sites. You can choose to include or exclude different resource types in your search results list. When finished click the green "Apply Filters" button that appears at the bottom of the list to confirm your choices.
- Publication Date - To adjust the data range click the box in front of the dates displayed then select the "Refine" link to adjust the date range. Sometimes instructors will give you a date range to limit your research to - for example, to only look at information that has been published less than 10 or 5 years ago. Using the Publication Date facet is an easy way to do this.
- Availability - The Availability facet offers the following options:
Available Online - Connects you to content to view that is available electronically in the library databases.
Peer-reviewed journals - Limits your search to show articles that are available from peer-reviewed journals. These articles have been submitted by authors and have been reviewed and approved for publication by a journal's editorial board of peers in the same field of study. To learn more view the Peer Review Explained in 5 Minutes video.
Open Access - Limits a search to show available open access articles. These are articles authors have agreed to legally be made available for use without requesting permission or paying a fee to view them. Anyone may copy, distribute or reuse these articles, as long as the author and original source are properly cited.
Physical Items - Limits a search to items physically located on the shelves in the library collection.
- Language - Results can be limited to display content written in English, or in another language.
- Subject - Click the down arrow to expand the category to see a list of subjects available to narrow your search. Hover over any you are interested in, then check the box to select it. When finished click the green "Apply Filters" button that appears at the bottom of the list to confirm your choices. Next examine your search results list to view the narrowed down list of records.
