Artificial Intelligence Research Guide

This guide offers information to help Library users learn basic information about AI.

Types of AI

While Narrow AI is already being widely used today, General and Super AI are still largely theoretical and the subject of much research and debate.
  • Narrow AI, also known as weak AI or artificial narrow intelligence (ANI), is AI that is designed to perform a single task or a narrow range of tasks. Examples:

  • A chess-playing program would be considered a narrow AI.
  • ChatGPT is also an example of Narrow AI because it is designed primarily for natural language understanding and generation.

  • General AI, also known as strong AI or artificial general intelligence (AGI), is AI that can perform a wide range of tasks and learn from experience like a human. General AI is the ultimate goal of many AI researchers, but it remains largely theoretical at this point.

  • Superintelligent AI, also known as super AI or artificial superintelligence (ASI), is AI that is more intelligent than the best human minds in practically every field, including scientific creativity, general wisdom and social skills. This type of AI is still largely theoretical and the subject of much speculation.

Links to access various Generative AI Tools and information on AI Prompt Writing Tips are available on both the Artificial Intelligence: Tools for Faculty and Artificial Intelligence: Tools for Students guides.
