Slave Narratives

Glossary

Federal Writers' Project - The Federal Writers' Project (1935-1943) was part of the WPA which hired folklorists, historians, journalists, and writers to compile a variety of ethnic, local and regional histories to be preserved for historical research.

Slave Narratives - Slave narratives are the written accounts of individuals who once lived as slaves. Many of the early slave narratives were written or dictated by runaway slaves. Many of these narratives took the form of published books and essays, or were presented as speeches at abolitionist meetings in the northern states. Slave narratives continued to be written after the American Civil War (1861-1865) with over 2,300 first-hand accounts compiled and preserved by the Federal Writers Project in the 1930s.

WPA - The Works Progress Administration (1935-1943) was a federal agency established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to put unemployed Americans back to work during the Great Depression.
