Samuel J. Stabins Collection

Black & white photo, Board of Trusteee member Samuel J. Stabins, MDA tireless and dedicated contributor to numerous community organizations, Dr. Samuel J. Stabins would play an important role in MCC’s development.  As former surgeon-in-chief of Genesee Hospital, he was aware of a critical shortage of qualified nurses. To rectify this community need, Dr. Stabins would champion a nursing degree program that would become the flagship of MCC’s curriculum. When the college doors opened on September 19, 1962, nearly 200 of the first 720 students were enrolled in the nursing program.

Named an MCC trustee in 1961, Dr. Stabins was elected chairman at the first Board of Trustees’ meeting, held on July 27, 1961. During his tenure as chairman, the college was established on Alexander Street and, ultimately, moved to its permanent home in Brighton. At the time of his passing in 1989, a memorial service was held at the college. On this occasion, MCC President Peter A. Spina, Ph.D. said, “This institution truly is, to use Emerson’s words, the ‘lengthened shadow’ of this person, Dr. Samuel J. Stabins.”
