Avoiding Plagiarism

5 Things New Students Need to Know About Plagiarism

Students Beware of Exam Help Scammers

Some students would like to get a good grade by cheating, but there is a hidden danger...

Read this very important article to avoid being victims of exam help scammers!

And, above all, do not cheat!

Plagiarism in Different Types of Creativity

Plagiarism does not exist only in writing.

Sculpture, painting, movies, music, photography, etc., are not immune to plagiarism.

AFTER YOU GRADUATE AND LEAVE YOUR COLLEGE, YOU SHALL NOT FORGET ABOUT PLAGIARISM!

Be Aware of Fauxtography! To believe or not to believe...

When You Don't Need to Worry About Plagiarism

When you write facts of common knowledge, you don't need to cite resources.

For example:

  • February is the shortest month of the year.
  • Paris is the capital of France.
  • Many people died during the WWII.
  • The Great China Wall was built to protect China against barbaric nomadic tribes.
  • Kangaroos live in Australia.

NOT COPYRIGHTED:

  • Works by the U.S. Federal Government
  • Phone directories (if not enough creativity involved)
  • Calendars (accompanying photographs might be copyrighted!)
  • Ideas (if not expressed in a medium)
  • Food recipes (if they contain only lists of ingredients and very simple basic cooking instructions)

Are Citations Bothering You?

Let's talk now about truly good reasons to use citations:

  • Giving credit and acknowledgment to the original author
  • Making your paper stronger by providing supporting evidence
  • In the era of fake news, giving citations will protect you for being a source of the misinformation
  • Getting a good grade

Google Images

Be careful when you are searching for an image on Google!

Under Tools look for Usage Rights. The best choice is to select image(s) labeled "Creative Commons licenses."
