Borrowing Materials

Students: Current students may borrow materials with any valid ID (MCC ID, driver's license, high school ID, etc.).

Faculty, Staff, and Administration: Current faculty (including adjunct and emeritus faculty), staff, and administrators may borrow materials with any valid ID (MCC ID, driver's license, high school ID, etc.).

Any item is eligible for renewal unless requested by another member of the MCC Community (i.e., recalled).

* All users will be charged for repair of damaged equipment or the full price to replace lost equipment.

**SUNY: All students currently registered at a SUNY college are eligible to borrow library materials from any SUNY institution with a current college ID card from their home institution and proof of current registration. All SUNY students from university centers, colleges of arts and sciences, community colleges, technical colleges, etc., qualify for this privilege.

***Rochester Regional Library Council (RRLC) ACCESS Pass: The Rochester Regional Library Council has a cooperative program for faculty, staff, and graduate students to borrow materials from many local college and business libraries. MCC faculty and staff, but not students, are eligible for this program. For more information, contact rrlc@rrlc.org, Subject: Access Card.

****MCC Foundation (alumni): All MCC Foundation card holders have MCC library borrowing privileges. All MCC graduates are automatically members of the MCC Foundation for one year after graduation. 

Returns | Lost | Damaged Materials

Return of Materials

All materials should be handed to a staff member at the Welcome Desk of the Library or Learning Commons or, at Brighton, returned directly to our book drop. At the Brighton campus, there is a book drop is located on the wall on the second floor of the north/south corridor to Building 11, outside the library.  Additional return boxes are located outside the library, and just inside the entry doors.

Late Return of Materials

 $0.25 per item, per hour

 Study rooms

 $5.00 per item, per hour

  1. Late material notices are sent via MCC email, the official form of communication at MCC.
  2. All users will also be blocked from borrowing when they have accrued unpaid fines exceeding $4.99.
  3. All users may renew an item by phone or email at any time unless the item has been recalled for another user or the item is late and three attempts have been made to contact the user to return the item.

Replacement Costs

  1. All users are billed for replacement costs when materials become “missing overdue or lost” in the library management system
  2. Accounts are forwarded to Student Accounts when several attempts have been made to collect payment and progress has not been made. 

Additional Access Assistance

If an Item Is Missing from the Shelf

If you cannot find the item you're looking for on the shelf, and the MCC online catalog indicates the item’s status is “available,” ask staff at the Service Desk. A staff member will later search for the item and notify you when it is found.

Placing an Item on Hold

If you find an item listed in the MCC Libraries’ online catalog that you would like to check out, first check the item’s status. If it is “available,” you may retrieve it from its place on the shelf. If it is currently loaned to another patron (i.e., the item’s status has a due date), note the author and/or title and bring your valid MCC ID card to the Service Desk to ask staff to place a hold on the item.

When the item arrives, you will be notified by email that the item is on hold for you at your campus’s Service Desk. Hold requests are filled in the order they are received. Once a hold is placed, the item cannot be renewed or checked out to another patron.

Having a Book Transferred Between Campuses

While using the MCC Libraries’ online catalog at one MCC location, you may find materials listed as belonging to the other location:

  •       PN6714.S255 2013           LeRoy V. Good Library – indicates an item at Brighton
  •       City LB3946.G34 1995      Downtown Campus – indicates an item at the Downtown Campus

If you would like the item to be sent to your campus, take the author, title, and call number information with a valid form of ID to the Service Desk to request a transfer. Items are shipped daily between Brighton and Downtown. When the item arrives, you will be notified by email that the item is on hold for you at your campus’s Service Desk.

Materials listed in the MCC Libraries’ online catalog in either campus’s Reserve or Reference locations may not be transferred between campuses:

  • Reference: the call number starts with Ref or City Ref
  • Reserve: the item status starts with Reserve (or the call number may be "Personal copy")
