How the Google Scholar Button helps when Researching Online

The Google Scholar Button adds a browser button for easy access to Google Scholar from any web page.

  • Find full-text on the web. Connect to scholarly articles on publisher websites, or available in MCC Libraries online databases.
  • Transfer your query from a web search to Google Scholar.
  • Create article citations in several styles.

After following the instructions bellow to install and pin the button, and link MCC Libraries to Google Scholar visit the "Using the Google Scholar Button" box below for tips on how to find and connect to full-text.

Installing the Google Scholar Button Extension

The Google Scholar button extension is available for: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari

To install the Google Scholar button in Chrome:

  • Find Google Scholar Button in the Chrome Web Store.
  • Click the Add to Chrome button.
    The following statement will appear: "It can: Read and change your data on scholar.google.com," Click the Add extension button.
    The Google Scholar extension will now appear in your Google Chrome "Extensions" feature.

Pin the extension in the Bookmarks bar:

  • In Chrome: You can pin the extension to your toolbar in Chrome by clicking the puzzle piece icon in the top bar of the browser and then clicking the pin next to Google Scholar.

Linking MCC Libraries to Google Scholar for Off-Campus Use

Follow these steps to add MCC Libraries to your Google Scholar preferences for off campus access.. These steps may need to be repeated whenever you clear your browser cache.

  1. Go to https://scholar.google.com
  2. Click the "hamburger" icon in the upper-left corner of the screen. Then click "Settings"

3. Next, click "Library Links" and type "Monroe Community College" in the search box. A list of results will appear.

Check the box in front of "Monroe Community College Libraries - ViewIt@MCC" and "Open WorldCat-Library Search" then click "Save."

4. When searching Google Scholar from off-campus, the entries in the results list that include a full-text link option for articles that are in MCC Libraries databases or available elsewhere will display the link "ViewIt@MCC." Since access to library databases is restricted to MCC students and employees, you will be prompted to sign-in to your MCC Network Account in order to gain access to a full-text article.

If no full text is available from the "ViewIt@MCC" link you will be directed to the library OneSearch tool where you can click "Check for Availability" to access the "Request Full Text" link to a request a copy of the article via MCC Libraries Interlibrary Loan service. Note for this step you may be prompted to sign-in to your MCC Network Account.

How do I get a copy of an article I found in Google Scholar that does not have a ViewIt@MCC link?

  • Click the double arrows icon at the bottom of a result.

  • Then click the "GetIt@MCC" link that appears to the left of the arrows.

You will be directed to the library OneSearch tool where you can click "Check for Availability" and sign-in to access the "Request Full Text" link to a request a copy of the article via MCC Libraries Interlibrary Loan service.

Using the Google Scholar Button: Finding Full-Text

Follow these steps to use the Google Scholar button for finding articles:

1. Search for journal articles as you usually would using Google or library databases.

2. As you browse pages containing articles, click the Google scholar button in the Bookmarks bar. A popup box will appear showing the top three scholarly article results.

3. Click the full screen icon in the popup to see more results in Google Scholar.

4. Click the "Viewit@MCC" link in either the popup or full screen view to gain access to an article in MCC Libraries online databases or on publisher websites.

If MCC does not have access to a specific article you need, see the instructions in the above box to learn how to request a copy of the article from Interlibrary Loan.
