Library Orientation for College Success Classes

LIBRARY ORIENTATION

College libraries are an important academic support! We are happy to teach your COS students how

  • MCC Libraries’ resources, services, and spaces can contribute to their success,

  • to get help from a librarian or other library staff member, and

  • navigate our physical and virtual spaces to access information resources and library services.

Please reach out to us if you want to arrange a synchronous library orientation session for your traditional, hybrid, or remote COS classes. Also, know that College Researcher tutorials will be available again soon to incorporate into your Brightspace courses (The Library Navigator badge was designed specifically with COS students in mind!).

Lesson Plan Ideas

  • Divide the class into groups of 3-5. Have groups explore one part of the library website  (e.g. library databases, help, interlibrary loan, etc.) and report back to each other on what they discovered.
  • Review library terms with the class. Use the Library Glossary for reference.
  • Students don't usually understand the Library of Congress call number system (how we organize and shelve books). Show our Call Number slideshow to help with this concept.
  • Are you ambitious and teaching MLA citation style? Students may enjoy one of these games as a review:  Citation Tic-Tac-Toe or Citation Game (reviews many styles, not just MLA).

Library Scavenger Hunt

These scavenger hunts were designed for use by COS faculty to assist students in learning about library resources and services.

Worksheets

Accessibility is important to us. While we have made efforts to make our guides as accessible as possible, it is possible that issues could be present. If you are having difficulty accessing content in these guides or if you have any questions about the accessibility of online information posted by the MCC Libraries, please contact us.
